How 3GPP NR-NTN Enables Smartphone Positioning Without GPS Hardware

Technical breakdown of 3GPP Release 17 and 18 positioning protocols: Timing Advance, multi-RTT, and Location Management Function (LMF) integration.

The Dependency on GPS

Smartphones determine location using onboard GNSS receivers. However, in emergency situations inside wilderness deadzones, dense tree canopies, or when GNSS antennas are damaged, GPS fails completely. Standard 5G terrestrial cellular networks provide cellular positioning using cell tower triangulation, but in remote areas, there are no towers.

Cellular Positioning via Satellite

3GPP Release 17 introduces satellite radio access directly to standard user equipment (UE). During the Random Access Channel (RACH) procedure, the smartphone sends an initial preamble. The satellite measures the exact round-trip propagation time, calculating an extended Timing Advance (TA) value. ``` +-----------------------+ RACH Preamble (Msg1) +-----------------------+ | Standard 5G Handset | --------------------------------> | Spaceborne gNodeB | | (No GPS Required) | <-------------------------------- | Timing Advance (TA) | +-----------------------+ Slant Range Measured +-----------------------+ | v Location Management Func E911 Dispatch Coordinate ```

Multi-RTT and PRS Enhancements in Rel-18

3GPP Release 18 enhances this with Multi-Round-Trip-Time (Multi-RTT) and Downlink Positioning Reference Signals (DL-PRS). When a smartphone receives PRS broadcasts from three overlapping satellite beams, it computes sub-50-meter coordinates, satisfying federal E911 emergency locator regulations.
